My dream years ago was to start my own business
But I had a problem.
A big problem!!
It wasn’t that I didn’t have enough money.
It wasn’t that I didn’t know what type of business I wanted to start
It wasn’t that I didn’t have a support system.
My biggest problem was I hated to write.
But if I didn’t write, then how could I attract potential new clients?
While studying Trusts and Estates for the CFP ® exam, naturally, I procrastinated.
I came across a book someone was recommending called A Mind for Numbers by Barbara Oakley on a message board.
I love numbers and was curious how the author who hated math, wrote a book on how to learn math and how did she become a professor of engineering?
Up to this point, I learned I had a fixed mindset which according to Carol Dweck, author of the book #Mindset, says a fixed mindset correlates with lesser wages, worse relationships, and higher levels of anxiety.
Naturally, if Barbara Oakley who was an English major can get a Ph.D. in a tech field, then if I’m a numbers person surely, I can learn to write, right?
Then the most unexpected thing happened.
What I discovered is writing helps you:
- think about new ideas,
- dig deeper and connect the dots on why we do the things we do and
- become creative
It’s scary to put myself out here in the open, but it helps me be genuine, authentic, and humble by writing about why I do the things that I do.
When my daughter who was struggling with math her freshman year cried, “I’m not a science person, I am a humanities person." I gave her my copy, A Mind for Numbers.
Oddly now a year and a half later, she is crushing it in math, physics, and chem.
Sometimes you never know discovering how to do things you hate can turn into something you love.
The obstacle is the Way, an amazing and great book by Ryan Holiday inspired me to face my obstacles!

Learning how to #invest in myself has allowed me a rich life and now I have the privilege of investing and serving women in transition as I once was in transition.
What do you hate to do that now you love doing? What is the biggest hurdle?
