This week in Paris has taught me the power of being present and how inspiration can flow from simply engaging with our surroundings and connecting with our kids.
Shopping and Money:
One of my conversations with my kids involved the topic of money, and I found myself questioning why I shared our net worth with Henry, who is 11 years old but not with my teenage daughters.
I also pondered why I spend a lot of money on clothes for the girls shopping but only 10 Euros on Legos for Henry.
Arts vs Adventure:
A highlight was discussing with the kids that we spent the same amount of money for Kiki to go on a Moondance trip last year, where she camped and went white-water river rafting in Utah and Colorado as we spent this year for her to attend a week at Berklee School of Music to learn songwriting. Plus a week in Paris where Kiki and Alexandra are attending six hours a day of French lessons.
Independence vs control:
Reflecting on an email exchange with a friend about balancing raising independent children and exerting control, I realized how challenging it is for me to find the right balance.
The more we tell our kids what to do the more they push back.
The less control we as parents have and, therefore, potentially more mistakes our kids will make, the richer lessons they learn and the more independent they become.
Innovation and Simplicity:
Going to the Picasso Museum helped me appreciate Picasso’s influence on Steve Jobs, who stressed understanding Picasso’s obsession (with The Bull) with continuous innovation and simplicity. This has inspired me to write a book to encourage young women to maintain their power when they marry. Even if they marry wealthy people, they still need to invest in their own careers.
From Mark Manson “When you decide someone else is responsible for your life—be it a person, a job, a government—you give them power over you.
When you decide you are responsible for your life, you empower yourself.
My key takeaway? When we relax and stay present, inspiration, ideas, and closer connections emerge from within us and with those around us.
