Dreaming Big in the Big Apple

Over Fall break, we attended a beautiful wedding, visited a college in Connecticut, and, of course, spent some time in New York City.

It's fascinating to observe a common trend among our kids and their friends

—they all seem to aspire to live in New York City after college.

 It’s a fantastic city.

As they say, if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere.

Frank Sinatra captured this sentiment perfectly in his iconic song,

"New York, New York."

During a serene morning run in New Canaan, CT, a spark of inspiration hit me.

What if we could spend a summer in NYC?

I could book Kiki (Caroline) on open mics, she could sing in Central Park, and Alexandra could possibly intern at the Wall Street Journal? It seemed like a perfect plan to me, but

Kiki's immediate reaction was to halt my dream.

"Stop," she said, clearly she was not on board.

I thought it was a brilliant idea.  But then I recalled Janet Jackson's backstory.

Janet Jackson’s father, Joe Jackson, managed his children's early careers with a firm hand. Eventually, Janet made the bold decision to fire him to take control of her life, a pivotal moment epitomized in her breakthrough album,

Control.

This album wasn’t just about music; it was about personal liberation.

Growing up with my single mom in LA (we moved there for her music career,

which went nowhere …) While I don’t want this to happen with my daughter,

she wants control, just like I wished for independence growing up with my mom.

My children, much like I did, crave their autonomy.

They want to carve their own paths, make their own mistakes, and claim their victories.

As parents, maybe our role is to support them from the sidelines,

but a ladder can't hurt, as they write their own chapters in the Big Apple!

We all want control over our lives,

some of us want more financial independence.

Please reach out if you feel like you need more ownership in your life.

With gratitude, thank you for reading!
