Going to Beverly Hills High School was surreal -
It was the time of the hit show 'Beverly Hills 90210',
the movie 'Less than Zero', and
Menendez brothers and Monica Lewinsky,
who I went to high school (photos from my 1989 yearbook).
The summer after I graduated from BHHS in 1991, my one claim to fame was NBC hired me to interview teen celebrities for the show, ‘A Closer Look’ with Faith Daniels.
As a flirtatious Luke Perry kissed me on the cheek during my interview with him on camera,
I tried to relax.
Where was this going to take me?
Nowhere … I couldn’t wait to get out of LA.
While in high school, my mom told me to “marry rich”.
My mother’s words never made sense to me.
At the time, my single mom and I lived in a crappy two-bedroom apartment at 136 South Linden Drive, Beverly Hills, 90212, south of Santa Monica BLVD and south of 90210.
She thought she had made it.
But what rich guy would want to be with a girl from the other side of the tracks?
When I arrived at UC Berkeley, I felt like I had finally broken free.
It wasn’t just about the escape from my past — it was about the independence, the chance to build something for myself. I fell in love with economics, with the exhilarating chaos of Animal Spirits, a concept that describes how emotions and psychology drive financial decisions.
It wasn’t just a theory in a textbook; it was a metaphor for my life.
What I lacked in terms of wealth, I had no choice but to develop one of the most valuable currencies of all: the #resilience to figure things out on my own.
“If I think life doesn’t happen to me but for me, I see 90 percent of my experiences as lessons I can take to the next one. I’m using my obstacles to my advantage." - Thomas Oppong
Life is happening for me, not to me.
What I love most about Beverly Hills High School was all of the rich lessons I learned,
- how to hustle
- stay hungry, especially this one:
- If I wanted to marry rich, I had to become rich myself.
What is the best game in town for a poor, hungry girl?
Wall Street
It’s where dreams can come true.
With gratitude, thank you for reading!
