When I was a kid, bored at my mom’s boyfriend’s condo, I started to draw hexagons.
One within another on graph paper.
Then it became an obsession.
I loved patterns.
Later in high school, my friends and I would go to a coffee shop called
The Living Room late at night on Fairfax.
We would challenge each other to talk to random guys.
We talked to starving actors and / or recovering alcoholics. Or both!
It was entertaining.
It was fun.
But as an average kid, I was always anxious about what career path I would pursue.
I definitely didn't want to go into the entertainment business.
But that was the only industry I knew at the time.
Thankfully patterns helped me discover economics which helped me to a career I love in investing.
But there was a problem.
After a good 15-year run, some luck and good market timing,
There were too many guys who were hungrier and cheaper,
who wanted to work on Wall Street.
Too much competition, robo advisors;
stock pickers like me were getting disintermediated.
Frustrated with my career at the time,
we were at dinner with friends.
My husband tells the other couple, people will pay you for your unique talent.
So my friend asks, "What is Tiffany’s unique talent?"
I had no idea.
My husband says, "She can talk to anyone."
We all have these random buried, hidden experiences and talents.
Things we did as kids which make us unique and who we are today.
The desire to fit in, unfortunately, makes us ignore these unique abilities.
Reading the book Mastery by Robert Greene
"We should direct ourselves to the small things you are good at."
My love for patterns, led me to economics, and then investing, but then I became a commodity.
Talking to anyone, led me to be a good listener, and friendly, which helps me connect with almost anyone.
We should concentrate on becoming proficient at our simple and immediate skills.
Proceeding this way, step by step, you will hit upon your life’s tasks.
Now, as an advisor and investor, I would have never imagined these two talents talking to random guys and love for patterns would help me make my clients:
- more successful,
- make their lives better and
- help them succeed
which brings me so much joy.
If you need a partner in investing, I'm here.
