How I became ready to make a difference

Writer: Tiffany KentTiffany Kent

I love March.  Spring is coming, and the weather is getting a little warmer. I grow to miss the cold winter days of my runs because I don’t sweat as much, but the offset is daffodils; flowers are in bloom everywhere. I’m more present a few mornings ago.

Change is good.

I recognize the need for change; my strategy needs evolution, and

I must go beyond my comfort zone.  I’m in another transition…

I've made 2025 my year of innovation or investment in others and in myself because “what got me here isn’t going to get me where I want to go.”

I recall a few years ago, I told a new friend I wanted to become the next Suze Orman, but I refused my own internal desire, the timing wasn’t right.

Sure, I am a financial advisor and know a lot about financial literacy and the stock market, but at the time, I didn’t have a lot of experience working with people… nor did I know enough about myself.

I had to learn about how people feel about the stock market,

the frustrations they were feeling about their life, their priorities, and what made them scared.

I had to also learn about my own fears…. Which was if I hadn’t figured out my transition in my career 9 years ago (which I’ve written about exhaustedly), I felt I would have run out of money but underneath it all, my real truth, I would not have been happy.

During my transformation, I was missing in my old life the idea of continuous growth and learning.  I had a fixed mindset.  I worked hard so therefore, I deserve X..

but this is not how the world works.

And here’s the bitter truth: ignorance of your values, beliefs, strengths, weaknesses, motivations and desires is your greatest failure in life. (from Thomas Oppong’s blogs and one of his greatest hits was Your Greatest Failure Is Not Knowing Yourself, Self-ignorance guarantees emptiness.)

Self-awareness is the foundation of wisdom, personal growth and success.

As a little girl, I loved math and money because I thought it was fun, a game, and it was entertaining. A lot of people didn’t experience math and money as I did,

I know I had a unique early learning about money that carried throughout my personal and professional life.

Pursuing money transformed my life for the better, but it also cost me.

My personality which once worked well on Wall Street, telling people the way I see it, this behavior was rewarded on Wall Street b/c it signaled confidence and seeing what others don’t see.  This behavior is also my greatest weakness that I’m tasked with overcoming …

I know now my experiences can rub some people the wrong way by me being too blunt and telling them what they can’t or shouldn’t do,

If I were them, I wouldn't listen to me either!!

You can’t give people the answers, you can’t immediately give them financial advice even when they ask for it… but you can give them options by leading with the numbers.

My self-awareness and this rich lesson helps me build up my human capital.

And this helps me establish a greater foundation of growth.

As time goes on, we grow and our experiences makes stronger in our position.

I believe that this growth process increases your self-esteem and you truly start to appreciate your own knowledge and skill level.

Recognizing i can’t tell others what to do, has been my biggest gift especially when it comes to improving my relationship with my kids… as i know i would never do what someone else told me to do so why would our kids do what we tell them to do…

So my next mission in life is for women to take full control of their financial futures must start with building a foundation of basic knowledge so they can make their own decisions.

It is my job to inspire others with this ownership and self-responsibility they must have.

Just like Suze, she transitioned into media, driven by a desire to empower people with financial knowledge and self-reliance

This will be the secret sauce to the launch of my teaching money and finance.

Today, I'm also hosting a small group to discuss transition with a few women based on Linda Rossetti's work and research, and who wrote Dancing with Disruption, A New Approach to Navigating Life's Biggest Changes.
