“I’m going to let you go.”

I remember hearing this when I got fired from a job.

I was lost and had no idea what to do.

Usually, when I experience a change, I’m excited about the next adventure.

But this time was different.

I had options.

I could ‘retire’ and take care of my three kids or figure out a new career path.

I asked my dad’s partner Peggy, who had worked her entire life,

“what should I do?”

just like Dorothy, from the movie, Wizard of Oz.

Dorothy sets off on the yellow brick road to find the Wizard of OZ.

She came to a crossroads and didn't know which way to go.

She meets the Scarecrow, and he has no idea which way to go either.

Then I came across Oprah’s speech at Harvard’s 2013 graduation class.

"When you fall", Winfrey said, “There is no such thing as failure.

Failure is just life trying to move us in another direction.”

Instead of just getting another job in my current field,

I chose a different path.

Now I look back.

I have a successful financial advisory and investment management firm.

What was my main motivator for making a huge change in my life?

Picking a different path.

Had I not gotten fired,

I would have never gotten my Certified Financial Planner ™ credential and I would have never started on my new path as a business owner.

The path to success is always under construction. Thanks to Westminster for providing me this reminder!
