When I was new to my role as a financial advisor,
I hated meeting other financial advisors.
We were all rats chasing the same cheese.
How can I compete among all of these men??
If someone asked me what I do,
I would tell the truth: I’m a financial advisor.
But then I would throw up a little bit in my mouth.
Why do we cringe when we meet a financial advisor?
I’m not sure.
Maybe folks aren’t sure what a financial advisor does.
Maybe folks are not sure if he/she can trust him/her.
But something interesting happened after I started writing and posting stories.
Something I didn’t expect.
I’m no longer competitive with other financial advisors.
Instead of being inward-focused, I’m outward-focused.
Showing up weekly writing a post gives me an outlet to share my war stories working on Wall Street.
Which brings me back to Main Street and Mad Men.
To quote from the book Seducing Strangers written by Josh Weltman, co-producer of Mad Men,
"Matt Weiner made Don Draper very good at his job, but he is a flawed character.
Don Draper can lie anywhere (to his wife, kids, to other women),
except Don can’t lie in advertising."
Writing personal stories, just like writing a good ad,
has to be honest in order to motivate someone to read something.
A post here won’t work if it is self-serving.
At its core, creative confidence is about believing in your ability to create change in the world around you. - Creative Confidence book by Tom Kelley, David Kelley
Every week, I’m showing up and writing about my journey.
I stopped worrying about others judging me and my work, and instead,
I rely on my inner compass.
My life experiences (personal and professional) as a woman in finance have given me rich lessons.
The point is, take a little risk.
Especially if it’s something you believe in.
The journey from novice to pro is not an easy one, when the challenges come, face them head-on.
The more I help people find their light, the brighter we will both shine.
If you need a financial advisor, I'm here.
