Parts Unknown and Becoming Savvy

There is something undeniably powerful, albeit intimidating, about stepping into the unknown.
Recently, through the Harvard Business School Club of Atlanta, I hosted a small gathering of women to discuss our life transitions. Leading with my own story, I created a safe space encouraging others to find and share their voices. It was a deeply heartfelt experience that reinforced the value of vulnerability in growth.
Then, just last week, I spoke at Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger event titled, Savvy Seniors which further highlighted the critical importance of educating and inspiring others in financial literacy—a mission that fuels my heart.
However, at the core, there is a bigger issue and pattern: both the women at my event and the seniors I spoke to followed the "correct" formulas for success, yet something vital was missing.
The attendees at the Savvy Seniors event, many of whom rely on pensions, social security, and annuities instead of traditional retirement plans like 401(k)s, expressed a strong desire to grasp the complexities of financial management.
The conversation inevitably turned towards how to select a trustworthy financial advisor and the importance of staying vigilant against fraud—a point driven home by the next panel which discussed the seductive language con artists use, often promising "guaranteed" investments, a clear red flag in any financial dealings.
Reflections and Realizations: This convergence of experiences brought to light a common thread: many of us have diligently followed prescribed paths only to discover they are never quite enough.
Why does this matter, at least to me? It strikes a chord deep within, pushing me to rethink not just the concept of hashtag#financialliteracy but our fundamental approach to life and decision-making.
Financial literacy = independence and personal power.
A big thank you to Noula Zaharis for organizing this great event!!
And if you are a woman in transition consider signing up for my next private event on May 2nd! Limited to 10 women. Please email me if you would like to attend!
Great to share the stage with Donna Lowry, Shardéa Ages, CFP® and Robert MacDonald.
Thanks for reading!
