I recently purchased a software service that I thought would address some pain points.
After I committed the money, I wasn’t scheduled for two weeks to learn how to use the software.
As I reflected more on the sales process,
- The guy was very aggressive.
- The company is VC-backed.
- So, it needs to get as much money in the door as fast as possible.
But they focused only on the money and failed to focus on the right thing.
They failed to give me
- a good onboarding experience.
- they didn't care about the customer.
So I asked for a refund.
“Show me the money”, Cuba Gooding Jr’s
Famous line everyone loves in the movie Jerry Maguire but the real beauty lies in Jerry's (Tom Cruise) statement to Rod (Cuba Goodings Jr.)
“I'll tell you why you don't have your $10 million yet.
Right now, you are a paycheck player.
You play with your head, not your heart.
In your personal life, heart.
But when you get on the field, it's all about
- what you didn't get,
- who's to blame,
- who underthrew the pass,
- who's got the contract you don't,
- who's not giving you your love.
And you know what?
That is not what inspires people.
Play it from your heart, and you know what?
I will show you the quan. And that's the truth, man!”
Rod takes Jerry's advice to prove he is worthy of his contract.
So recently, I revisited the book From Strength to Strength by Arthur Brooks,
I love this part that talks about intrinsic motivation vs extrinsic motivation.
Extrinsic motivation focuses on money, while intrinsic motivation focuses on deep, and enduring relationships.
From a study the book mentioned, those who are most happy are those who focus on investing their time intelligently on intrinsic motivation.
From a podcast with Author Brooks says it best,
"It's okay to have extrinsic goals but what is key is intention not the attachment to goals.
It’s all about the journey." Not the money.
