Turn a negative into a positive

My 2022 summer was one of the worst.

While on vacation in France,

investors turned negative on the economy.

They dumped stocks, worried about a U.S. recession.

My daughter and I were fighting a lot.

I was stressed.

But I didn’t sell.

Instead, I looked at the correction as a buying opportunity.

I was greedy when others were fearful - a famous quote by Warren Buffet.

But then I got the news.

It was a Tuesday after Labor Day.

I had breast cancer.

I sat quietly for about an hour at my co-working place - Eleanor's Place.

No one was around.

After an hour, I accepted it.

I could have spent some time researching it further

but instead, I went back to work.

I focused on what I could control.

As the surgery neared,

I was scared about getting a double mastectomy.

But I was mostly bummed I wouldn’t be able to run for eight weeks.

The day before my surgery.

While on my last run for a while, I was listening to a book by the blogger Vex King.

Vex had a really hard childhood, he was homeless, living in poverty.

He was full of wisdom as a result.

I learned from Vex,

Instead of being scared, I can turn something negative into a positive.

I can make myself excited about the surgery.

I can choose to have a negative experience or a positive experience.

At the hospital, before my surgery,

I chatted with the nurse and the Chaplin and

deeply connected with strangers.

The nurse told me her ex-husband is a financial advisor.

Then she showed me her ex-husband’s FINRA BrokerCheck

He has 15 violations.

Wow, I had no idea there were bad financial advisors out there.

The next day after my surgery,

My dad and I wanted to work on some compliance projects.

So I went back to work the next day.

As I look back on the year, it was one of the best years of my life.

I healed quickly.

I was back running in 3 ½ weeks, not eight.

(Photo of me on my first run back- this time last year.)

The U.S. economy didn’t go into recession.

The market recovered.

I stopped fighting with my daughter.

My business doubled.

We all have the power to turn something challenging into something meaningful.

We can all turn a negative into a positive.

Like an absolute value, but we have absolute power.

- Getting back to work,

- Choosing to heal fast,

- Sharpening my focus on serving my clients and

- writing my blog weekly

Helped me create positive energy.

This is how Breast Cancer helped me learn to turn a negative into a positive.

If you are going through a tough transition, I can help.
