You have choices — just may need a nudge

Ever try to get a kid to do something they really don’t want to do, like get ready for bed?

Which superhero jammies would you like to wear — Superman, Batman or Luke Skywalker?

Kids are masters of delay tactics and finding distractions to stall at bedtime. They can turn a simple decision about pajama fashion choices into a 10-minute discussion about the merits of each superhero in their dresser drawer.

Some days we are paralyzed by too many choices and too many decisions. There’s even a term for it: analysis paralysis. What should I have for breakfast? Which pair of blue jeans should I wear? Which radio station or podcast or music will I listen to?

As adults, we get caught up in the plethora of choices and end up getting stuck or nervous about making decisions so they end up doing nothing and sticking your head in the sand.

I recently had a discovery call with a woman in her 70s who has been legally separated for many years and has somewhat limited choices for the remainder of her life. She has no retirement savings, but she owns her house mortgage-free and collected decent sums of money to live on from her ex while they were separated.

If this woman had come to me 20 years ago, I would have told her to save $2,000 per month and invest it. Had she done this, she would have had $800,000 to $1.4 million, depending on her asset allocation.

Why didn’t anyone in her family tell her to check her blind spot?

Economics is flawed for assuming people are rational when they're not. People struggle to make sense of probabilities. Sometimes we procrastinate doing what’s in our best interest and ignore likely risks and events.

95% of women will be their family’s primary financial decision-maker at some point in their lives. Help them prepare for this event.

If you have a mom, a sister, an aunt who you love 💓and want to make sure she will be set up financially she needs to be nudged.

Us adults kids should take the time ⏰ to make sure our parents, mother, aunts, sisters are set up for financial success.
