You’re so money you don't even know it.
Classic line from the movie Swingers, written by Jon Favreau and directed by Doug Liman.
As a portfolio manager at a hedge fund, I bought and shorted stocks.
Sometimes I was smart when Rio Tinto bought Alcan, in which I was sized up.
Sometimes I was unlucky when I was short Atlas when Chevron announced it was buying the company.
One experience felt euphoric.
The other experience felt like I stepped on a small landmine.
In life and investing, you can be smart but sometimes unlucky.
But I stayed in the game, made more money than I lost, and have had many rich experiences to share and grow from.
We know life and the stock market do not go up and to the right in a straight line.
Nor do we know:
If our marriage will end in divorce.
If we will have to make a major career move.
If we want to start another company after selling the 2nd one.
Right now, the investment climate is pretty bad.
There are increasing headlines of recession, energy crisis, war, and inflation.
The market is volatile.
People are leaving their jobs,
or #quietlyquitting.
But this is the time when winners and losers are created and the difference is
Resilience.
We need to bet on our resilience and the resiliency of others.
We can safely assume - some people and companies will want to make money.
So they will:
Get creative and figure out ways to cut the fat and gain efficiencies.
Managers will get rid of unproductive employees and cut costs.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai has hinted at possible layoffs as he wants to make the company 20% more efficient.
There will be an increase in innovation.
It’s a cleansing process, so keep in mind we must go through this transition process together.
It was crazy that I started writing this blog.
But just taking a chance, throwing something out there, who knows what will happen?
To take risks, you never know where this new growth will take you.
